I live in Florida, and an nephew has moved in with me. For
complex reasons, he wont be getting a job soon, and has no insurance.
Does anyone know of a worthwhile Dental Policy available for individuals
in Florida? I asked my dental office, and was told point blank that
individual dental policies were a waste of money.
Based on personal research it seems she was correct. The policies
tend to have 12 month lead times before they pay for anything
significant, and even then there is a high annual deductable. Once the
deductable is reached, they pay about 50% of many, but not all,
procedures.

| Discount dental plans, of the type found at sci.med.dentistry
spam, pays the dentist zero. Instead, you the patient pay the
dentist some discounted fee. What does the plan do for you?
They give you a little booklet so you can find the discount
dentist. This is not always a good idea. Remember, you are
trusting him/her to tell you what you need. Its not
refrigerators or TVs. |
| So if the insurance companies covered all this elective dentistry,
everyone would use the dental insurance like crazy. Everyone would have
expensive stuff done and it would cost so much money that your employer
wouldnt be able to pay for coverage. |
| Its going to cost you more wherever they do needless
treatment or inferior treatment. This can happen anywhere. It
happens in and out of network. They are trying to set
themselves up as the final arbiter of good (and not
overpriced) dental treatment. It might be a step in the
right direction, but remember, they are collecting the
premiums for doing this. They have a vested interest in
promoting their own network. |
| In actuality, dental insurance is essentially a way for an employer to
give its employees a tax favored benefit. Your employer makes a tax
deductible payment to the insurance company. Any benefit payable to or for
you is not taxable to you. The insurance company makes a profit, the
employer gets a deduction, you get a benefit. Everyone is happy. |
